I quite like it. Far, f ar out of my price range and needs though.
$1000 Monitor stand is laughable.

That’s just for the computer. The 32" screen is $5k.
Based on the upgrades you can do to it I wonder how much it will top out at?

used Fiesta ST or new desktop?
hmmm

Also: $5,999 only gets you 256gb of storage.

Easily $12k.

I’m trying to wean people off from their Macs here because the IT budget takes a beating with those things and they are a pain in the ass. There is no earthly reason a bookkeeper needs a Mac to run QuickBooks, but in the past the powers that be allowed such things. No more. The new CEO is actually backing me on this one as she is nothing if not practical. Even the trashcan Mac Pro will be replaced with a Windows workstation when the time comes.

Less than $100 of hard drive in a machine that costs as much as a decent used car. It’s insulting.

Yeah, and you know it’ll be $1000 for a 1 TB SSD.

Oh my word though, 1.5TB of RAM!? That made my heart skip a beat...can’t wait to build/price a top of the line one just to see.

That's one expensive cheese grater.

You can bet that it's gonna be way more than $6k.

I am with you every character.
I am an educator and I watched with incredulity as education embraced iPad. For about a minute. Talk about a pain in the ass to support...

Well of course, that’s entry pricing. I’m assuming top of the line, maxed out everything will push $20K, maybe $25K (based on their gauging price structure (and I say this as an Apple fan/Apple only household)).

I think it’s pretty hideous lol, I think I’ve already purchased my last Mac computer, I loved my 2012 MacBook Pro and foolishly bought into a 2018 MacBook Pro thinking they had fixed the keyboard but they didn’t. I’ll probably get a thinkpad or surface as my next computer. Or build a tower.

Idk, I think that’s a pretty cool- looking cheese grater. Definitely, some Bauhaus- inspired shapes.

Oh.

I s that really what the new mac looks like on the left or is it a cheese grater?

I buy Apple because of their design, but also because of the durability and ease of use.
I have not enjoyed the Windows-ification of the MacOS over the last several years. Stuff is getting too complex and hard to master. I have also had to fix things more in the recent Macs than I used to back in the day.
Still, the ecosystem is a big advantage to me.

A little food for the discussion: John Martello, who is a little prone to navel-gazing but usually has it right, says the new Pro machine is just what Apple needed to release. I’ m not the market for this machine, but I do know that Apple has neglected its pro users for far too long. I am glad to hear it’s showing that it still cares about that market.

That stupid HP graphic they showed was such nonsense. I was able to price out an HP Z6 workstation with better components for $550 less on HP’s site.
I’m glad they finally made the Mac Pro something awesome again but the entry level price is now twice of what it used to be.

I moved Brown University’s media production over to Adobe Premiere and managed to get them to try Windows since Premiere runs about twice as fast for 1/2 the hardware cost. Not sure exactly where that ended up since I left before a final decision
was made.
Education is crazy about this stuff. That department used to wait for the new Mac announcement, then buy the most loaded up previous generation macs they could spec out because “they never trust the 1st generation of anything”. I imagine they STILL have a bunch of old cheese graters around.
What shocks me is that even just last year, I had people asking me at work why I didn’t use a Mac - everyone in Silicon Valley uses a Mac. My response always pissed people off but it was “because we’re a startup and I needed good performance for the Adobe Suite without draining company resources.” I had an unbelievably high performance laptop with top of the line graphics card, 128 gb of ram, 2TB SSD, and i7 processor for the cost of a mid -spec macbook .

I do not hate myself enough to subject myself to Linux on the desktop . Using it for our web server is bad enough, thanks. Luckily the software that most of the production employees have to access is Windows only so it’s not even a possibility.

I’ve been thinking about you today because I’ve started deploying Windows 10 to my fleet of computers and it has been unbelievably easy. I’ve done two upgrades and one clean install and the existing Win 7 Pro keys have worked fine in all three cases. One thing I’ve discovered is that for upgrade, better practice is to copy the contents of the USB drive to the local hard drive and run the update from there. The clean install on the Dell laptop came up short on the same USH drivers, usually a control vault and a free fall sensor, but clean install is WAY faster than Win 7.
Question for you: I’ve been running Win 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials. MSE is explicitly not able to run under Win 10 because Windows Defender. Should I run some other antivirus? Antivirus programs are a PITA because many reasons, namely, they BUG THE CRAP OUT OF YOU ALL THE TIME. What do you recommend?

Hah, never once have I used something other than defender. It’s the security goodness of essentials with none of the bloat. You’re good mah dude! Glad it’s been going smoothly. Enjoy the fresh experience. When I upgraded from 7 on some of my machines they felt a lot quicker.
![]() 06/03/2019 at 19:22 |

Yes, I think they boot faster and generally run faster.

At least you can add your own memory and internal storage now. It will be interesting to see if CPUs are user-upgradable and what kind of compatible GPUs come out besides the MPX modules that are sure to carry a big markup.

I genuinely thought that was a cheese grater as a joke. Damn. I guess there aren’t too many places you can go from “trash can”

It's an easy joke because everyone is using it, but no, it's the truth.

Now that I have ALL of the bells and whistles turned off, like hiding scroll bars and all that irritating start menu crap, and setting some colors that are more reminiscent of Classic Windows, I don’t mind Windows 10 and it definitely seems to make the PC more snappy. And simply upgrading is so easy that there’s really no point in the struggle of a clean install.
Do you happen to know if I can clone a Windows 10 drive using Macrium?

Awesome.
Hm, not sure. Never used Macrium.
